Would McDonalds Hire The Burger King?

About a week ago Burger King announced it was going to terminate the King's employment. Without ever saying a word, the King character has worked hard as Burger King's mascot, getting himself into silly situations and attracting attention to Burger King's menu. Unfortunately, for the King character, his hard work didn't pay off for him personally. Without even a thank you, Burger King asked him to leave. Was there another job he could do within the company? No. Will the King be able to work at Wendys, McDonalds, or Subway? Most likely not.

The King's biggest problem is that he didn't create a plan B. Just like what happened to the King, companies laid off millions of people over the last several years and those people have found out the hard way that their particular skill set is not readily transferable. What they have been doing for years doesn't quite fit in anywhere else. Now, they are faced with the pressure of trying to quickly learn new skills that will allow them to earn a salary that is comparative to their last one or taking a drastic pay cut when accepting an entry level position and starting over again doing something else.

The lesson to be learned from the King is not to put all your eggs in one employer's basket. Be sure you are constantly upgrading your work skills and keeping yourself in a highly marketable position. Don't rely on your employer to plan your career or provide you with training. Take college classes, take part-time jobs, or take online courses that teach you something new that you can apply to work. Don't let yourself look like The Burger King applying for work at McDonalds.
